Muskingum football delivered a dominant performance on both sides of the ball to earn a decisive 37-13 road victory at Otterbein in Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
The Muskies (2-1 overall, 2-0 OAC) controlled the line of scrimmage from the opening drive, using a balanced attack to pile up 483 yards of total offense while the defense stifled the Cardinals (0-3 overall, 0-2 OAC), limiting them to just 251 total yards and only 81 through the air.
Muskingum's special teams set the early tone, as freshman kicker Aaron Ortega drilled first-quarter field goals from 29 and 40 yards to give the Muskies a 6-0 edge. The offense extended the lead in the second quarter when senior quarterback Garrett Gurney connected with sophomore receiver John Christopher Gore for an 11-yard touchdown strike. Otterbein briefly responded with a 53-yard touchdown run, but the Muskies quickly answered as Gurney found sophomore receiver Cade Searls for a 21-yard touchdown to push the halftime lead to 20–6.
In the third quarter, Muskingum leaned on the ground game. Sophomore running back Riley Woodie capped an 8-play, 71-yard drive with a 1-yard rushing touchdown. Ortega added his third field goal of the day in the fourth quarter, before junior quarterback Cavan Cooper hit Searls for a 58-yard touchdown bomb to seal the win. Ortega ended the outing scoring 13 points for the Muskies and averaging 59 yards per kickoff.
Defensively, the Muskies were relentless. Sophomore defensive lineman Nathan Thomas spearheaded the effort with two sacks, three tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery. The defense forced two turnovers, posted three sacks, and kept Otterbein's passing game in check.
The victory keeps Muskingum unbeaten in OAC play.
