The Muskies opened the scoring with an explosive strike in the first quarter, when senior quarterback Garrett Gurney connected with sophomore wide receiver John Christopher Gore on a 62-yard touchdown to give Muskingum a 7–0 advantage.
Muskingum continued to produce chunk plays on the ground behind sophomore running back Riley Woodie, who powered the offense with a 156-yard rushing performance, including a 50-yard breakaway run in the third quarter that electrified the home crowd.
Heidelberg answered the early Muskie charge with 20 unanswered points to take a 20-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Gurney and Gore linked up for their second score of the game, a 2-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter, to pull Muskingum within 20–14.
However, Heidelberg responded by scoring the final nine points of the game to seal the result.
